Description

A moist and flavorful Apple Brown Butter Upside Down Cake topped with caramelized apples and brown butter.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 4 medium apples (such as Granny Smith or Honeycrisp), peeled, cored, and sliced
  • 1/2 cup (115 g) unsalted butter
  • 1 cup (200 g) brown sugar, packed
  • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 1 cup (125 g) all-purpose flour
  • 1 teaspoon baking powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon baking soda
  • 2 large eggs
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1/2 cup (120 ml) buttermilk

Instructions

  1. Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease a 9-inch round cake pan with butter or non-stick spray.
  2. In a medium bowl, toss the sliced apples with cinnamon and a pinch of salt. Set aside.
  3. In a saucepan over medium heat, melt the unsalted butter. Continue cooking, stirring frequently, until the butter turns a golden brown color and has a nutty aroma, about 5-7 minutes. Remove from heat and let it cool slightly.
  4. In the same cake pan, add the brown sugar and the browned butter. Stir until well combined. Arrange the apple slices in a circular pattern on top of the sugar mixture, overlapping them slightly. Set aside.
  5. In a large mixing bowl, whisk together the flour, baking powder, and baking soda. In another bowl, combine the eggs, vanilla extract, and buttermilk. Add the wet ingredients to the dry ingredients and mix until just combined.
  6. Gently pour the cake batter over the arranged apples in the cake pan, spreading it evenly with a spatula.
  7. Place the cake in the preheated oven and bake for 35-40 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean.
  8. Once baked, remove the cake from the oven and let it cool in the pan for about 10 minutes. Carefully run a knife around the edges to loosen it. Invert onto a serving plate.
  9. Slice the cake and serve warm or at room temperature, optionally with whipped cream or vanilla ice cream.

Notes

  • For added flavor, consider adding a pinch of nutmeg or cardamom to the apple mixture.
  • Ensure the apples are evenly arranged for a beautiful presentation.
  • Store any leftovers in an airtight container at room temperature for up to 2 days, or refrigerate for longer freshness.
