Description
Brown Butter Date & Orange Cake is a moist and flavorful dessert that combines rich brown butter with the sweetness of dates and the zest of fresh oranges.
Ingredients
- Unsalted butter – 1 cup (227 grams)
- Brown sugar – 1 cup (200 grams)
- Granulated sugar – 1/2 cup (100 grams)
- Eggs – 3 large
- All-purpose flour – 1 1/2 cups (190 grams)
- Baking powder – 1 teaspoon
- Baking soda – 1/2 teaspoon
- Salt – 1/4 teaspoon
- Ground cinnamon – 1/2 teaspoon
- Fresh orange zest – 1 tablespoon (from about 1 orange)
- Chopped dates – 1 cup (about 150 grams)
- Orange juice – 1/4 cup (freshly squeezed)
- For the glaze:
- Powdered sugar – 1 cup (120 grams)
- Orange juice – 2 tablespoons (freshly squeezed)
Instructions
- Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease and flour a 9-inch round cake pan or line it with parchment paper.
- In a medium saucepan over medium heat, melt the unsalted butter. Continue cooking, stirring frequently, until the butter turns a golden brown color and develops a nutty aroma, about 5-7 minutes. Remove from heat and let it cool slightly.
- In a large mixing bowl, combine the brown sugar and granulated sugar. Pour the browned butter over the sugars and mix until well combined.
- Add the eggs one at a time, mixing well after each addition until fully incorporated.
- In a separate bowl, whisk together the all-purpose flour, baking powder, baking soda, salt, and ground cinnamon.
- Gradually add the dry ingredients to the wet mixture, alternating with the orange juice. Begin and end with the dry ingredients. Mix until just combined.
- Gently fold in the chopped dates and orange zest until evenly distributed throughout the batter.
- Pour the batter into the prepared cake pan and smooth the top. Bake in the preheated oven for 30-35 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean.
- Once baked, remove the cake from the oven and let it cool in the pan for about 10 minutes. Then, transfer it to a wire rack to cool completely.
- In a small bowl, whisk together the powdered sugar and orange juice until smooth. Adjust the consistency by adding more orange juice or powdered sugar as needed.
- Once the cake has cooled, drizzle the orange glaze over the top, allowing it to drip down the sides.
- Slice the cake and serve it on a white plate. Enjoy the rich flavors of brown butter, dates, and orange in every bite!
Notes
- For added texture, consider adding chopped nuts, such as walnuts or pecans, to the batter.
- This cake pairs beautifully with a dollop of whipped cream or a scoop of vanilla ice cream.
- Store any leftovers in an airtight container at room temperature for up to three days or in the refrigerator for up to a week.
