Description

Brown Butter Date & Orange Cake is a moist and flavorful dessert that combines rich brown butter with the sweetness of dates and the zest of fresh oranges.

Ingredients

  • Unsalted butter – 1 cup (227 grams)
  • Brown sugar – 1 cup (200 grams)
  • Granulated sugar – 1/2 cup (100 grams)
  • Eggs – 3 large
  • All-purpose flour – 1 1/2 cups (190 grams)
  • Baking powder – 1 teaspoon
  • Baking soda – 1/2 teaspoon
  • Salt – 1/4 teaspoon
  • Ground cinnamon – 1/2 teaspoon
  • Fresh orange zest – 1 tablespoon (from about 1 orange)
  • Chopped dates – 1 cup (about 150 grams)
  • Orange juice – 1/4 cup (freshly squeezed)
  • For the glaze:
  • Powdered sugar – 1 cup (120 grams)
  • Orange juice – 2 tablespoons (freshly squeezed)

Instructions

  1. Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease and flour a 9-inch round cake pan or line it with parchment paper.
  2. In a medium saucepan over medium heat, melt the unsalted butter. Continue cooking, stirring frequently, until the butter turns a golden brown color and develops a nutty aroma, about 5-7 minutes. Remove from heat and let it cool slightly.
  3. In a large mixing bowl, combine the brown sugar and granulated sugar. Pour the browned butter over the sugars and mix until well combined.
  4. Add the eggs one at a time, mixing well after each addition until fully incorporated.
  5. In a separate bowl, whisk together the all-purpose flour, baking powder, baking soda, salt, and ground cinnamon.
  6. Gradually add the dry ingredients to the wet mixture, alternating with the orange juice. Begin and end with the dry ingredients. Mix until just combined.
  7. Gently fold in the chopped dates and orange zest until evenly distributed throughout the batter.
  8. Pour the batter into the prepared cake pan and smooth the top. Bake in the preheated oven for 30-35 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean.
  9. Once baked, remove the cake from the oven and let it cool in the pan for about 10 minutes. Then, transfer it to a wire rack to cool completely.
  10. In a small bowl, whisk together the powdered sugar and orange juice until smooth. Adjust the consistency by adding more orange juice or powdered sugar as needed.
  11. Once the cake has cooled, drizzle the orange glaze over the top, allowing it to drip down the sides.
  12. Slice the cake and serve it on a white plate. Enjoy the rich flavors of brown butter, dates, and orange in every bite!

Notes

  • For added texture, consider adding chopped nuts, such as walnuts or pecans, to the batter.
  • This cake pairs beautifully with a dollop of whipped cream or a scoop of vanilla ice cream.
  • Store any leftovers in an airtight container at room temperature for up to three days or in the refrigerator for up to a week.
