Ingredients

  • 4 large eggs
  • 1/3 cup granulated sugar
  • 2 cups whole milk
  • 1 cup heavy cream
  • 1 cup bourbon or rum
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1/2 teaspoon ground nutmeg

Instructions

  1. In a bowl, whisk the eggs until they are well combined.
  2. Add granulated sugar and whisk until the mixture is smooth.
  3. In a saucepan, heat the milk and cream over medium heat until warm.
  4. Slowly pour the warm milk mixture into the egg mixture, whisking constantly.
  5. Return the mixture to the saucepan and cook over low heat, stirring until thickened.
  6. Remove from heat and stir in bourbon or rum, vanilla extract, and ground nutmeg.
  7. Chill in the refrigerator for at least 2 hours before serving.
  8. Serve in glasses and garnish with additional nutmeg if desired.

Notes

  • For a non-alcoholic version, omit the bourbon or rum.
  • Can be made a day ahead and stored in the fridge.
