Ingredients
- All-purpose flour – 2 cups (240 g)
- Baking soda – 1 teaspoon
- Ground cloves – 1 teaspoon
- Ground cinnamon – 1 teaspoon
- Ground ginger – 1 teaspoon
- Salt – 1/2 teaspoon
- Unsalted butter – 1/2 cup (113 g), softened
- Brown sugar – 1 cup (200 g), packed
- Molasses – 1/2 cup (120 ml)
- Eggs – 2 large
- Milk – 1/2 cup (120 ml)
- Granulated sugar – 2 tablespoons (for topping, optional)
Instructions
- Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease a 9×5-inch (23×13 cm) loaf pan or line it with parchment paper.
- In a medium bowl, whisk together the all-purpose flour, baking soda, ground cloves, ground cinnamon, ground ginger, and salt. Set aside.
- In a large mixing bowl, beat the softened butter and brown sugar together using an electric mixer on medium speed until light and fluffy, about 3-4 minutes.
- Add the molasses to the butter-sugar mixture and mix until well combined. Then, add the eggs one at a time, mixing well after each addition.
- Gradually add the dry ingredient mixture to the wet ingredients, alternating with the milk. Start and end with the dry ingredients, mixing until just combined.
- Pour the batter into the prepared loaf pan. Optionally, sprinkle granulated sugar on top.
- Bake for 50-60 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean.
- Once baked, let the loaf cool in the pan for about 10 minutes. Then, transfer it to a wire rack to cool completely.
- Slice the loaf and serve plain or with butter.
Notes
- Consider adding chopped nuts or raisins for extra flavor.
- Store leftovers in an airtight container at room temperature for up to 3 days or freeze for longer storage.
