  • 1/2 cup unsalted butter
  • 1 cup granulated sugar
  • 2 large eggs
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1 1/2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 teaspoon baking powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 cup buttermilk
  • 1 tablespoon lemon zest
  • 1 tablespoon orange zest

Instructions

  1. Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C).
  2. Grease and flour a 9-inch round cake pan.
  3. In a saucepan, melt butter over medium heat until brown.
  4. Remove from heat and mix in chopped dates.
  5. In a bowl, whisk together sugar, eggs, and vanilla.
  6. Add the brown butter and date mixture to the bowl.
  7. Sift in flour, baking powder, baking soda, and salt.
  8. Mix in buttermilk, lemon zest, and orange zest.
  9. Pour batter into the prepared pan.
  10. Bake for 30-35 minutes or until a toothpick comes out clean.
  11. Let cool before removing from the pan.
