Description

Ginger Orange Molasses Cake is a spiced cake that combines the flavors of ginger and orange for a moist and flavorful dessert.

Ingredients

  • All-purpose flour – 2 cups (240 g)
  • Baking soda – 1 teaspoon
  • Ground ginger – 2 teaspoons
  • Ground cinnamon – 1 teaspoon
  • Ground cloves – 1/2 teaspoon
  • Salt – 1/2 teaspoon
  • Unsalted butter – 1/2 cup (115 g), softened
  • Brown sugar – 1 cup (200 g), packed
  • Molasses – 1/2 cup (120 ml)
  • Eggs – 2 large
  • Fresh orange juice – 1/4 cup (60 ml)
  • Orange zest – 1 tablespoon
  • Fresh ginger – 1 tablespoon, grated
  • Candied orange slices – for topping

Instructions

  1. Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease and flour a 9-inch round cake pan or line it with parchment paper for easy removal.
  2. In a medium bowl, whisk together the all-purpose flour, baking soda, ground ginger, ground cinnamon, ground cloves, and salt. Set aside.
  3. In a large mixing bowl, beat the softened butter and brown sugar together using an electric mixer on medium speed until light and fluffy, about 3-5 minutes.
  4. Add the molasses, eggs, orange juice, orange zest, and grated fresh ginger to the butter-sugar mixture. Mix until well combined.
  5. Gradually add the dry ingredient mixture to the wet ingredients, mixing on low speed until just combined. A few lumps are okay.
  6. Pour the batter into the prepared cake pan, smoothing the top with a spatula.
  7. Bake in the preheated oven for 30-35 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean.
  8. Once baked, remove the cake from the oven and let it cool in the pan for about 10 minutes. Then, transfer it to a wire rack to cool completely.
  9. If desired, prepare a simple glaze by mixing powdered sugar with a little orange juice until you reach your desired consistency. Drizzle over the cooled cake.
  10. Top the cake with candied orange slices for a beautiful presentation.
  11. Slice the cake and serve it. Enjoy the rich flavors of ginger and orange!
