Ingredients

Scale

For the Cake

  • 1 ½ cups (190g) all-purpose flour
  • 1 cup (200g) granulated sugar
  • ½ cup (100g) packed brown sugar
  • ½ cup (115g) unsalted butter, softened
  • 4 large eggs
  • 1 cup (240ml) whole milk
  • ½ cup (50g) unsweetened cocoa powder
  • 1 tsp baking powder
  • ½ tsp baking soda
  • ½ tsp salt
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract
  • ½ cup (90g) semi-sweet chocolate chips (optional)

For the Chocolate Frosting

  • 1 cup (230g) unsalted butter, softened
  • 3 ½ cups (440g) powdered sugar
  • ½ cup (50g) unsweetened cocoa powder
  • ¼ cup (60ml) heavy cream
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract

A pinch of salt

Instructions

  1. Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C).

  2. Grease a 9×5 inch loaf pan with butter or cooking spray and lightly dust with flour.

  3. In a bowl, sift together flour, cocoa powder, baking powder, baking soda, and salt.

  4. In another large bowl, cream together butter, granulated sugar, and brown sugar until light and fluffy.

  5. Add the eggs one at a time, mixing well after each addition. Stir in the vanilla extract.

  6. Gradually add the dry ingredients to the butter mixture, alternating with the milk, mixing until just combined.

  7. Fold in the chocolate chips if using.

  8. Pour the batter into the prepared loaf pan and smooth the top.

  9. Bake for 60–70 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted in the center comes out clean.

  10. Let the cake cool in the pan for 10 minutes, then transfer to a wire rack to cool completely.

Notes

  • Use high-quality cocoa powder and butter for the best flavor.

  • Do not overmix the batter to keep the cake soft and tender.

  • Start checking for doneness at the 60-minute mark.
