Description

A flavorful Molasses Orange Tea Cake that combines warm spices with fresh orange zest, perfect for tea time.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 cup molasses
  • 1/2 cup unsalted butter, softened
  • 1 cup brown sugar, packed
  • 2 large eggs
  • 1 cup all-purpose flour
  • 1 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 1/2 teaspoon ground ginger
  • 1/4 teaspoon ground nutmeg
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 cup orange juice (freshly squeezed is best)
  • Zest of 1 orange
  • Powdered sugar, for dusting
  • Optional: Glaze (1 cup powdered sugar mixed with 2-3 tablespoons orange juice)

Instructions

  1. Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease and flour a 9-inch round cake pan or line it with parchment paper.
  2. In a large mixing bowl, beat the softened butter and brown sugar together until light and fluffy, about 3-5 minutes.
  3. Add the eggs one at a time, mixing well after each addition.
  4. In a separate bowl, whisk together the flour, baking soda, cinnamon, ginger, nutmeg, and salt.
  5. Gradually add the molasses and orange juice to the butter mixture, mixing until combined. Slowly add the dry ingredients, stirring until just mixed.
  6. Gently fold in the orange zest.
  7. Pour the batter into the prepared cake pan and smooth the top. Bake for 30-35 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted comes out clean.
  8. Let the cake cool in the pan for about 10 minutes, then transfer to a wire rack to cool completely.
  9. If desired, mix powdered sugar with orange juice to create a glaze and drizzle it over the cooled cake.
  10. Dust the top of the cake with powdered sugar before serving.
  11. Slice and serve with a cup of tea or coffee.

  • For added texture, consider folding in chopped nuts or raisins.
