Description

A classic English dessert featuring a rich, moist cake flavored with treacle and topped with a sweet orange syrup.


Ingredients

  • 200g all-purpose flour
  • 100g unsalted butter
  • 150g treacle
  • 100g brown sugar
  • 2 large eggs
  • 1 tsp baking powder
  • 1/2 tsp salt
  • 150ml milk
  • zest of 1 orange
  • juice of 1 orange
  • 100g sugar for syrup

Instructions

  1. Preheat the oven to 180°C (350°F).
  2. Grease and flour a cake pan.
  3. In a bowl, cream the butter and brown sugar until light.
  4. Add the treacle and mix well.
  5. In a separate bowl, whisk the eggs and milk together.
  6. Gradually add the egg mixture to the butter mixture.
  7. In another bowl, combine flour, baking powder, and salt.
  8. Mix the dry ingredients into the wet ingredients until just combined.
  9. Stir in the orange zest.
  10. Pour the batter into the prepared pan.
  11. Bake for 30-35 minutes or until a toothpick comes out clean.
  12. While the cake bakes, make the orange syrup by boiling the juice and sugar until thickened.
  13. Once the cake is done, let it cool and drizzle with syrup.
