Ingredients

  • 2 1/2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1/2 teaspoon baking powder
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 1 cup unsalted butter, softened
  • 1 cup powdered sugar
  • 1 egg
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1/2 teaspoon peppermint extract
  • red food coloring
  • granulated sugar for coating

Instructions

  1. Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C).
  2. In a bowl, mix flour, baking powder, and salt.
  3. In another bowl, cream butter and powdered sugar.
  4. Add egg, vanilla, and peppermint extract to the butter mixture.
  5. Gradually add the flour mixture to the wet ingredients.
  6. Divide the dough in half. Color one half with red food coloring.
  7. For each cookie, take a small piece of each color, roll into ropes, and twist together.
  8. Shape into a candy cane.
  9. Place on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper.
  10. Sprinkle with granulated sugar.
  11. Bake for 10-12 minutes or until lightly golden.
  12. Cool on a wire rack.
