Ingredients
- All-purpose flour – 2 cups (240 g)
- Baking soda – 1 teaspoon
- Ground cinnamon – 1 teaspoon
- Ground ginger – 1 teaspoon
- Ground nutmeg – 1/2 teaspoon
- Ground cloves – 1/4 teaspoon
- Salt – 1/2 teaspoon
- Unsalted butter – 1/2 cup (113 g), softened
- Brown sugar – 1 cup (200 g), packed
- Molasses – 1/2 cup (120 ml)
- Eggs – 2 large
- Orange zest – 1 tablespoon (from about 1 orange)
- Orange juice – 1/4 cup (60 ml)
- Vanilla extract – 1 teaspoon
- Powdered sugar – 1 cup (120 g)
- Orange juice – 2-3 tablespoons (30-45 ml)
- Orange zest – 1 teaspoon (for garnish)
Instructions
- Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease and flour a 9-inch round cake pan or line it with parchment paper.
- In a medium bowl, whisk together the all-purpose flour, baking soda, ground cinnamon, ground ginger, ground nutmeg, ground cloves, and salt. Set aside.
- In a large mixing bowl, beat the softened butter and brown sugar together until light and fluffy, about 3-4 minutes.
- Add the molasses, eggs, orange zest, orange juice, and vanilla extract to the butter mixture. Beat until well combined.
- Gradually add the dry ingredient mixture to the wet ingredients, mixing on low speed until just combined.
- Pour the batter into the prepared cake pan and smooth the top. Bake for 30-35 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean. Allow to cool in the pan for about 10 minutes, then transfer to a wire rack to cool completely.
- In a small bowl, whisk together the powdered sugar and orange juice until smooth. Adjust the consistency as needed.
- Once the cake is cooled, drizzle the orange glaze over the top and garnish with additional orange zest if desired.
- Slice the cake and serve. Enjoy it as a dessert or with your afternoon tea or coffee.
